  Very ripe fruit here and lots of freshness in a very high-toned style. Hints of cedar and chocolate on the palate along with violet spice. Graceful richness here with a nice bit of complexity on the finish but I didn't like this as much as some others at the table as the high-toned nature seemed to keep the wine off balance. Out of magnum.

  From magnum. Fresh red fruit, light funk and crystalline structure. Incredibly fresh

  An epic vertical of Chateau Montrose (Restaurant Daniel): WOTN for me. Gorgeous elegant nose. Still remarkably youthful and vibrant at age 70. Dark fruit with nbelievable complexity. This was a revelation. Montrose vertical 1895-2000

  Happily, London is the land that forgot to drink its 47s! I found two - the Barton and the Montrose. This was a high mid shoulder Cruse bottling. The Montrose was delightfully elegant; a powdery nose of raspberry, blueberry and, with time, a touch of clay and violets. The presence on the nose and on the palate kept gaining over the course of an hour and maintained that for another hour and a half until we finished the bottle. More elegant than typical for Montrose, but such things happen when you keep a wine this long (though by comparison, the 1959 remains unrepentantly powerful). Living a little dangerously so not sure I would chase more of these, though this was a lot of fun to drink. Also of note was the lack of marked volatile acidity.
  
  This was another case wherein the "wisdom" that these old wines should avoid air and be drunk quickly after the cork is pulled proved incorrect.
