I did not enjoy this bottle as much as the previous some 4 years ago. In particular I didn't care for a rusty metallic steak on the nose but this element blended well with other features on the palate. This was quite full bodied for Burgundy with fruit and general complexion more savoury than I noted before with touches of ivy and gentle spice leading to a surprisingly firm finish for a soft vintage. The best feature was the long fragrant after-taste which lingered on as a I went to fetch a bottle of port. I'm not sure whether this overall showing represents the beginning of fading or simply a less open phase which might have been attenuated by decanting. Just about very good but not worth the members' average value of nearly $400 and still less the Wine Searcher quotes of >€1400.

Great bouquet, consistent with the theme of the afternoon that the ‘97s are giving off more expressive and showy aromatics right now while the ‘96s are probably technically superior and built for a longer haul. This is excellent with fresh and pure red and blue berry fruit and much more rusticity and Gevry soil than the ‘96 Bèze though not as much as the ‘97 straight-Chambertin. Very happy drinking this today. 94-96.

Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Bèze: 1964 - 2014 (Per Se): Intricate nose that has red, blue, and black fruit in addition to clays and ceramic notes. Punchy. Somewhere between the overwhelming power of the ‘99 and soft elegance of the ‘98. Balanced palate with depth of red and black berry flavor. Enjoy this quite a bit.

Mesquite smokiness with flavors of dried black cherry and porcini mushrooms. Continued to open up across an hour, but the lightness of body suggests only a few years life left on this venerable grand cru from a controversial year. Pretty acidity and quite balanced. I'd have to agree with the reviewer just below this one. The wine was definitely medium puprpl (pron. pup-rupple)
