  • Super expressive. Love the fruit. A touch green compared to the 1990 next to it.

  • A perfectly stored bottle from the BB&R Family Reserves.

Wonderfully mature claret. Nose lovely dark fruit, cherry some blackberry with smokey cedar and dried flowers. Very elegant on the palate. Port Puri, cherry, blackcurrant. Some chocolate and leather. Very fresh and vibrant still. Nice long finish showing the complexity.

What was really awesome was trying this alongside the 1994 Ardanza which was already drinking well and being enjoyed by all. This just blew it out of the water. My WOTN as well as many others at the dinner.

  • My third bottle of 7 bought from an impeccable source, this has delivered everytime. My favourite right bank estate, this vintage embodies the unique Merlot/Cabernet Franc profile of the wine. The nose is tertiary with beef blood and old leather aromas, with tell tale green bell pepper notes on the palate. With this bottle there was still some residual tannin on the finish that still needs to resolve, and prevented the extra half point. However, the finish is perfectly balanced and seamless.

  • Animal skin & sweat. Leather. Clean after-image of fruit on the palate, hinting at berries. Ultra clean, beautiful finish. Totally integrated, a single straight line from sip to finish. Really pleasant.

  • This is a very good example of 1989 Cheval. Maybe it’s luck or maybe this really is slowly improving over time. The palate is full of mineral, plum, and chocolate which collectively manage to counterbalance the slightly raw vegetal element on the nose (it seems like the Cabernet Franc had trouble with ripeness). Yet the whole package hangs together as an enjoyable wine.

(Château Cheval Blanc) Medium garnet red color with pale meniscus; sexy tart plum and leather nose; solid, cassis, tart red fruit palate with tobacco and a touch of herbaceousness; medium finish
