  • Way back when I first started collecting in 1996 or so, I liked to buy mediocre-to-good wines from strong vintages and just let them age. (Come to think of it, I still like to do that.) This bottle was one of the first I acquired with the intent of just letting it lay there for a while. I originally bought 5 or 6 of these, along with a similar quantity of mid-level Beringers, Mondavis, and Estancias. I think it was rated in the high-80s by WS, and given the stellar reviews for 1994 in CA I thought it was good bet to drink above its weight as a $14 cab. I was right for a few years, but this wine is now officially over the hill, and probably has been for 2 or 3 years. I decanted it, noted significant browning (WAY beyond bricking), had a sniff and a snort, and headed back down to the cellar to get something else. On the way back to the kitchen, my wife shouted how much she loves the smoothness and fruit of it. Oh well. To me there was almost nothing left of any flavor, although with an hour or so of air it started to release a *little* more on the nose and palate. And it is plenty smooth, along the lines of tap water. But to me this represented the end of an era, as this is darn near the end of my 1994s (my others are an Insignia and a Janus, way out of this little guy's league). At its peak this was probably a 90-pointer.
