  • Served blind.
Crystalline scarlet to the rim with not a hint of rust/garnet
Fresh red cherry fruit with balanced acidity.
I actually guessed carignan, but thought 2014.
At 18 years old this is drinking perfectly. A huge surprise! PD himself suggested a drinking window of 2002-2007.
The most recent CT notes from 2005-2010 suggest drink up, but this example was perfect.

  • nose: chalky, licorice-scented red fruit. Also some tar/dust action. It doesn't stand out, but it doesn't offend, either.
palate: attack is quite silky, but not terribly interesting - some muted cherries and bruised strawberries are hinted at. Midpalate is a bit hollow, though the finish is quite long but...boring. Some barky, chalky tendancies over what feels like old fruit. I think this wine is tired. Winebid bottle, all appearances indicated a perfectly stored example of Ridge single vineyard.

  • Medium garnet color with strawberry-red highlights. Aromas of bright cherry fruit, strawberry, guava, with hints of apricot and dried pitted fruits. Damp earth, wet stone. Flavors of bright cherry fruit, round tannins. Good fruit/acid balance. Dusty cherry/spicy oak finish. Exemplifies the charm of old-vine carignane.
    (Varietals: 99% Carignane, 1% Zinfandel) (ALC:14.3 %)

  • Pleasant nose showing some complexity, with notes of ripe fruit, leather, earth, and spices. Nicely balanced, with a silky mouthfeel finishing with fine, slightly grippy tannins and a bit of bitterness and rusticity (food is advisable). Quite enjoyable, this wine has quite a bit of life left in it.
