Peter's 40th Birthday celebration at Nicolas. Very dark, with brown tones. Old saddle leather, sandalwood, earth, mushrooms and sour cherries. Very intense palate, showing the ripeness and heat of the vintage, but showing excellently (like another bottle I had last year). Beefy and meaty, lots of ripe dark cherries and plums, coffee, chocolate and hazelnuts. Again, I would say this lacked the complexity and finish, but I shouldn't be nitpicking on a lovely example of an aged Burgundy at its peak drinking window.

On a random Tuesday evening. This was a really special bottle, encased in a single original carton box. On the first pour, the wine was pale brown, almost orange, with a spicy nose of copper and animal blood. Barnyard, lots of funk. Left it in bottle (uncorked) for about an hour. On the second pour, this displayed a lovely dark hue, very seductive and beautiful. The nose had plums, prunes, some dried roses with leather and earth. The palate had a real exotic spice, lovely round tannins with decent structure. Fruits were matured, plums and prunes, some game and beef stock. I must add that the wine constantly evolved brilliantly in the glass, constantly putting on more weight, more perfume and more characteristics. My only grouse about this wine (like the rest of the 1976s I've had) is that it lacked the complexity and the length. But it certainly ticked all other boxes. What a lovely treat.

Nose is haunting......speechless palate shows spice, cherry, earth, leather, minerals, wet leaf, porchini mushroom, and an almost chocolate note Finish is so long and full.....not sure what else to say....unreal!
