This bottle seemed a bit out of balance to me. Still a huge wine with forward and sweet fruit, spice, and alcohol. This wine would seem to be able to go another 20 years, but don't know whether it will improve - somewhat port-like.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Tasted double blind. Boysenberry and black cherry aromas, similar flavors. Big fruit, very fat, fairly hot, then also slightly bitter near the end. Surprisingly fresh for its age. Clearly New World, tough to identify varietal, but I correctly guessed Zin. I didn't like this wine, although others enjoyed this far more today.

Zin and Burgers (Slater's 50/50, Anaheim, CA): Bright Zin fruit on the nose with light pepper notes. Still very substantial dark berry fruits in front of prominent acids. Shows some age with more air but drank very nicely overall. Terrific.

Who says Zinfandel doesn't age? Purchased from the winery about 4 years or so ago, this was an early ATP wine. Although stored on its side since I received it, there were some problems with a very dry cork - it crumbled to pieces and I ended up pushing it into the bottle and then decanting. Some minor bricking on the edges, and a full nose of vanilla and berry. Upon decanting it was still very closed, but the wine was young with elegant but full-bodied fruit, soft tannins and a surprisingly long finish with a soft mouthfeel. If I didn't know what this was, I would not have guessed Zinfandel. The next day I thought the wine was more characteristic of the variety, with a more typical Zinfandel nose. Some of the fruit had dropped out with some slight sour berry taste and the tannins were more pronounced. Definitely a wine better enjoyed on the first day (after decanting).

Purchased at the Geyserville tasting room in 1999, this wine is finally, to me, at its peak. A silky smooth zin; a style you really don't see nowadays.
