Contino vs Riscal old vintages wine tasting.
‘74 is the very 1st vintage of Contino when it all started. So thrilled to approach the roots and taste the history. Wine is in perfect shape. Opens up with wet mop aromas, but not repellent. Very smooth and round on the palate and reveals its age compared to the younger vintages. Finish with unusual vivid lipstick flavour. Overall demonstrates signature style of Contino.

Riscal vs Contino: Contino is very consistent - this inaugural vintage '74 was similar in style with '80 and '82 we had alongside. Smoky vanilla, medium+ body, complex and interesting. Develops smoky notes as well as honeycomb aromas.

Wraysbury Dinner (Home): Mid ruby, reasonably bright. My third bottle of this in eighteen months, and from a stunning bottle initially, the second was a little less composed, and this one a step further down whilst still being a very good mature Rioja, it lacked the pizzazz of that first bottle. A touch of coffee, less of the orange peel than one might have expected. Still reasonably plush fruit, but just lacking that little something. Can't argue with bottle variation after 40 years though! ***1/2

Proper wine. Fully mature. Classic orange peel. A faint waft of coffee grounds and earl grey. The lifted scent of bergamot flowers. Very smooth and elegant. Sensual and silky. Vestiges of sweet fruit but very much back in the chorus and not a soloist. Lovely, but lacks depth and density of fruit cf previous bottle of this. ****

K&L Wine Merchants Special Rioja Tasting - Cune/Contino (K&L Wine Merchants(Redwood City, CA)): Garnet color with a brick hue and thin meniscus. Shows complex aromas of dried cherry, orange peel, camphor aromas. On the palate, it's exceedingly smooth, elegant, and Burgundian with dried cherry, spice flavors with a savory undertone. Long finish.
