  • I love the nose on older Bordeaux. So much going on on this one. There is some brett and funk, but I don't find it objectionable.

The color on this is surprisingly dark, and youthful. Some bricking but not what I would expect.

Soft and enjoyable, but fading. I am surprised that 68% of the bottles are still in cellars and have not been consumed.

  • This is one of 4 remaining bottles I bought in 1976. Austin Nichols went bankrupt and their inventory was dumped on the NYC market. I bought 60 bottles for $5.50. These bottles had lain dormant in my cellar for about 30 years. I took them to a local BYOB and brought a 2009 Reserve de la Contesse as a back up. We never opened the Reserve. The 1970 PL was good. The ulage was down to just whenre the shoulder starts. The comment by my friend who is retired from a career in wine improrting was " This is what "Old Bordeaux" is like. It was delicious but it wasn't a young wine. What a treat. The 90 rating is really just a Gentleman's C

  • From own cellar. Always a moment of great emotion when one opens a 50+ year old wine. Gets one thinking about time, mortality etc...This cannot edge out the memory of a recent fantastic Forts de Latour of the same vintage etched in my mind. It feels like its better days are behind it. It is now an elegant , consistent but also somewhat skeletal package. Still very pleasurable but best drunk up.

  • The 1970 Chateau Pichon Lalande boasts a robust ruby color that catches the eye. Its sophistication is evident in the delicate interplay of berry and leather aromas. With a texture that melts in the mouth, this vintage is a true delight. The well-preserved cork adds to its allure, and it serves as a perfect accompaniment to a juicy porterhouse, creating a harmonious dining experience.

  • Surprisingly this is the first time I've had 70 Pichon. A single low neck bottle bought in auction. Lots of sludgy sediment. Sous bois nose later very smoky. Then leather with a touch of chocolate. Silky smooth palate with good fruit and persistent length. This bottle would have been wonder 20 years ago and is now in slow decline.
