Won at fundraiser auction. Decanted & served immediately March 11, 2023 with chopped liver prepared with prosciutto, juniper berries, & tomato sauce followed by roast guinea hen & wild rice with mushrooms: v. fragrant nose, complexity & structure; v. long finish, still v. fresh! Compares favorably to the superb 1966 Heitz Martha's Vineyard Cab. Sauvignon?

Ridge Monte Bello Retrospective (Porter House): An interesting theme for me with the MB's from the 70's is how they all seemed almost younger than the wines we'd had before from the 80's and 90's. The last thing I said about this one was too young. It is a really nice wine (esp given not a super year) - dark fruits and more fresh and young and minty and lovely. Really enjoyed.

Dark rust color with significant thinning at the rim. Aromas of porcini juice, green tobacco, and a hint of currant. On the palate, this shows leather, porcini mushrooms, cedar, and humidor. This didn't budge with 24 hours of air, so appears to be in a final state. Interesting as a historical artifact, but not one to seek out from this particular example. Drink up.

Ridge Monte Bello Vertical 1972-2003 (Chez Kailin - Northbrook IL): Tasted single blind in 1972-1992 vertical. Good aromatics of floral, cedar and some dark cherry and currant. Flavors of black cherry and background mushrooms. Good spice on finish. not powerful, but elegant balanced and almost lacy. I preferred this to most others in the group tonight.

Ridge Monte Bello Vertical 72-03 (Ken's house, northbrook IL): nose: real lovely and perfumed nose filled with black currants, cedar, tobacco, dark red cherries and bits of red florals. Excellent depth and is very expressive and elegant as it just wafts out of the glass
taste: great classy and polished medium feel. Tannins are fully resolved with great medium acidity along with tones of sour cranberries, bits of cedar, menthol, dark red cherries and some real tasty tones of black currants
overall: the color on this was absolutely stunning. There wasn't too much bricking and it had a lovely garnet hue in the glass. This has more then kept itself together over the ensuing decades and comes off as having plenty of legs left. A very elegant wine that also brought about a great finish. (my 2, the group's 5)
