  • My last bottle. Kept in our cellar for 25+ yrs. Cork crumbled but the bottle was filled to the neck level. Moderate sediment. Opened at 5:00pm and tried after a 30 minute decant, out of concern that the wine would be short lived. Brownish red color. Musty, wet leather and underbrush dominated the aroma, with some weak cherry notes peeking through. Tannins were completely resolved, but the taste was similarly dominated by damped wood and barnyard, with scant fruit remaining. My wife refused to keep drinking it, while I persevered. At about 11:00pm the wine came alive, much to my surprise. The off-putting aromas and flavors disappeared, and the fruit emerged. At this point it became a full-bodied, outstandingly smooth expression of mature Rioja with dominant sweet fruit, slightly mineral, complimented by faint cigar and orange peel notes, and a 30+ second finish. I was shocked, and had my wife taste it as well. She couldn't believe it was from the same bottle!

  • This bottle was past its best. This could be bottle variation.

  • Served alongside the 81. A little fuller and fresher initially, seemingly more than a year younger than the 81. As previously, bright acidity, fading red fruit and a touch of orange peel. Lacks the vibrancy and depth of the 81 which opens up and pulls away from it over the course of an hour or two. Similar to previous bottle last summer. The 81 is the better wine. Still, very good trad Rioja in its own right. ****

  • Mid garnet. Quite a spicy, lifted nose with a slightly herbal element. Quite light, bright, with good acidity. A touch or orange rind and fireside spice with a (slightly fading) red fruit profile. Not easy, but there's quite a bit of interest here. Opens and hold well over 90mins or so. A fine, cooly silky texture and profile. **** but it probably needs to be your thing. I can see myself following a bottle over an evening with pleasure.
