Believe the hype. This is quintessential napa. No one does napa more authentic and category defining than Harlan and this is a strong vintage. This may not be as dense or tall as the 07', it wins my heart with its stoic classic napa flare. Don't get me wrong. This is not a traditional Bordeaux and nor should one be ever expected from this legendary estate. Lots of every kind of fruit in it with some burnt sugar to spice things up. Very round texture. Tannins more resolved than 01'. This gives out a round and smooth texture which makes it very enjoyable right now. Near perfection in its style. One should expect nothing less.
Quite spectacular again. I let this breath for 4 hours poured back into the bottle and put back into cold storage. Remove the next day and let breath again for 5 hours. This in my opinion is a 3rd day wine. The only thing that stopped a 99-100 was the alcohol on the finish. But this was medium bodied, not thick or rich like a caymus ss. It was sexy and suave. Laid across your mouth like a piece of silk. Massive flavors of red fruits, oak wood, cola, tea leaves, burnt charcoal, and spices. The finish lasted for over a minute. This was very very good.
stood for 12 hours, decanted for 4.5, consumed over 3. very little sediment. in the decanter it smelled fine, nothing spectacular and a little worrying given its price. once ready to consume...
what to say about this wine? it's the closest thing to wine perfection I've ever had. billowing waves of concentrated, spicy fruit pack a massive punch but are shockingly delicate and balanced. nuance upon nuance with oozing black fruits, cinnamon red hots, deep spice, chocolate, coffee, and earth. it was what I wish Bordeaux was. we absolutely loved this, and over 3 hours it did not change much. it has a massive life ahead of it. even at its price, it is squarely worth it. just stunning stuff. if scoring, 98-100. and to think this is a "lesser" vintage of Harlan! I can't imagine one of the better vintages is like.
Decanted; dark, inky, syrupy purple; bright nose, herbs, cinnamon, mint, black cherry, juju beans; powerful, viscous fruit and bold tannins coat the mouth for a minute or more; some schist, loads of black cherries, caramel, maple, candy apple, red licorice; massive, nearly overpowering; could age at least another decade to 'calm it down'; not a great QPR; 18.5
