  Oh my.
  
  Brick red at rim. Dark cherry core in the center. Aromas of bacon fat and mint, tar and molasses in the background. Persisting acidity and tartness on the palate. Light in weight, but long with dilute cola echoes. Really delicious, and prime.

  From magnum. This is perhaps my favorite Copain syrah vineyard. It has such a Northern Rhone character to it, that I find it hard to believe it comes from California. The nose is teeming with nicoise olive, garrigue, granite and game meat. Lots of acidity here, fruit is a bit lean, this needs time, especially in this format.

  Light+ bodied, traditional styling. Nose is small sweet bramble berries and lactic like a warm creamy yogurt. Palate has the light mouthfeel of coastal Pinot Noir with further continuation of berries, rhubarb, fruit skins, and hints of char and earth. Tannins fully resolved, the backbone is a soft acidity.
  
  Drinking at fruit peak now, will develop more tertiary over the next 5 years.
  
  Edit: I don't get any N Rhone "meat/fat" at all, would put it closest in taste and style to modern Willamette PN. If you're looking for a Northern CA take on N Rhone style: aged Peay, Lagier Meredith, and Halcon are a good start.

  From a magnum that leaked during transit (packed upside down) and ulled about 5cm, so figured I’d better drink up. Just finished a bottle of JL Jamet Cote Rotie and wanted to keep that cold climate syrah thing going. Pulled the cork and thankfully it looked sound. Really meaty, gamey nose, laced with minerals and olive tapenade. Tight, juicy/acidic and unevolved in this format (I had a 750 recently that was open for business). Red fruits, bacon fat and orange blossom on the palate. As others have stated and I noted from my first notes seven years ago, this is a ringer for a very good Northern Rhône (think St Joseph crossed with Cote Rotie). I think these mags could easily go another decade, which I hope they do since this is my son’s birth year.
