  • No formal notes.
My blind guess was some Aussie or other third world fancy Shiraz wine.
I was wrong, once the bottle was revealed, but right in one way, since it might just well have been some SA or Aussie wine, the way it showed.
This was hot, almost of the charts.
Felt like the fruit was too concentrated, more like stewed and cooked, with allot of alcohol all that showed, leaving a very unbalanced result.
Loads of oak on top of this left us with a very unbalanced result in the glass.
An off bottle, or the vintage?
I would, judging from other vintages of Guigal La-la’s I’ve enjoyed, guess for the first option, an off bottle?
Still, this was not very good, and when the bottle was revealed, surprise and disappointment.
Points based on this bottle, and perhaps (likely) there are better examples out there?

  • Paired with a rare steak and the combination was just dynamite. This wine was drinking pretty much perfectly (although still has a long life ahead I'd guess). Smokey and brambly and just delicious. Probably my WOTD after a pretty impressive line-up (we were at a wine auction before the dinner where we got to try some lovely items including a 1990 Dom Perignon P3).

  • My first bottle from a second case. This was only given about 45 minutes in decanter and consumed over the next hour or so. It was very good, but not as glorious as the last bottle - likely because my last bottle was stored in a slightly warmer cellar and was given 3 hours of air. Still really nice with a long live ahead. A-/A

  • Decanted 3 hours. Upon opening this was medium red, showing just the slightest bit of age in the color. But it was a bit tight. With a few hours of decanting this was a great combination of lush and balanced. It shows some oak, and a lot of pepper and leather, but it has great fruit, and is a very sexy wine that goes well with the right food and is great to drink on its own. Just great balance for a wine with its characteristics. I remember having this wine some 15 years ago in Paris wondering what age would do - it has done all you would want it to do. Based on this bottle I would be drinking now, but this will not fade anytime soon. A

  • Massively oaky. There's plenty of fruit beneath, and some spicy and smoky elements, but the wood here overpowers everything. I've liked some of the Guigal LaLas in the past, but this certainly isn't one of the bottle I'll remember well.
