Double decanted several hours lovely rose, cherry, tar, and iron notes on the nose. This shows the ripeness of the vintage but kept in check. Mid plus weighted, sappy, but structured with a lovely conveyance of power with grace. Good underlying acidity, an honestly surprising amount for '90, keeps it fresh. Some decaying leaves, balsam, and dried porcini umami notes on the back end. Some drying tannins on the back end. It's not the end all in nuance or complexity, but a solid wine of its place. Drinking at peak in this format. Quite long.

From 3L bottle. Perfect now. Fine perfume, mid weight, some tannins but very light. A bit of sweetness but it added to the overall effect. Enough depth balanced by good acid and earthiness. I can see this might be tired in 750ml but in the large format this is quite good.

From Dbl Magnum Decanted 60 minutes. Colour has softened but still deep red. Opened up in glass with good, if sweeter fruit on the nose and palate. Probably at its best now, though may run on a few years.

Marcarini Brunate vertical (Chicago, IL): Like many other European 1990 reds, this wine is starting to wear down. The ripe fruit has started to decay and there are some unpleasant browned plum flavours on the nose and palate. Quite earthy and mulchy, without the purity of fruit and elegance that I look for in nebbiolo. I'm not sure that this bottle was entirely sound, but there's a slight bit of stewiness on the palate as well and the wine seems a little tired to me.

Drinking well, lots of ripe cherry, mature but not tired, nice acidity.
