Surprisingly huge divergence in ratings by Neal Martin of Vinous (86 pts) and Andy Howard, MW of Decanter (94 pts) on this wine. I lean more towards AH’s view (I would change my initials though). I loved the beautiful rich fruit common to many of the ‘03s when I first tasted and bought a few bottles of this four years ago. It has since firmed up with ample acidity and tannins showing considerably more structure since then. Has plenty of stuffing to evolve and I would not open another for at least five years. Martin is an unapologetic purist claiming that wines need to be judged by their adherence and resemblance to the classic expected styles and character of a given wine “place”. 2003 messed with that substantially in burgundy but this wine is excellent, even if it isn’t classic and easily identifiable. 91+

WC L'Arlot virtual wine tasting. Sample pour. Drank in Grassl Cru. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, garnet colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of stewed red cherries, overripe strawberries, Asian spice, suave earth, hints of meat, light burst of sweet florals also. Developed. On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol, integrated medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of chocolate cocoa powder, stewed red cherries, overripe strawberries, sweet spices, savoury earth, sweet meat. Almost a little raisiny. Reasonably long finish. Good quality. Vintage characteristics show. Time to drink up and enjoy.

(l'Arlot Nuits St.Georges Clos des Fôrets St.Georges) Medium-plus cherry-red. A little tighter, more linear and darker shaded than the l'Arlot. Lots of action on the palate, bulkier with more tannin, brighter fruit in the background. Again the weight of dry extract on the finish. A good wine, but I still prefer the l'Arlot in this vintage

At Boston Wine & Poker, Needham, Mass, Sept. 18, tasted blind:
Clean, incisive pinot noir with some age, no sweetness.

Lovely 2003. Stemmy foresty nose. Forward bright cherry fruit, raspberry, cranberry. Rich and still on the way up towards maturity.
