Wines of the Gods (House of AC and JC): Component of DRC Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux vertical. Dark ruby with nose of ripe Saskatoon berries. Big boy sweet palate of ripe blueberries, powerful and intense, making one wonder if we are crossing into California. Long smoke-dried cranberry finish. Caution:this is not an elegant wine-get over it! Tasters may argue about this wine, wondering if it is true to DRC expectations? I doubt if anyone on the planet would pick this as a 19 year old DRC wine, but France has considerable vintage variations that most embrace. I loved it and although a total monolithic outlier that probably will not make old bones and turn into a classic DRC rose petal/cherry glass of magnificence, easily wow on the YUM factor now, if you like this style. Best now-2035.

La Paulee Gala….tasted in a vertical, this was one of my least favorite. I’ve heard DRC did well with the heat in 03, but this didn’t taste like it. The aromas are very enticing but the fruit felt particularly ripe and less complex (93-94)

10/09/05/03/02/00/98/90 vertical. Similar weight and density to the 05 with just a touch of heaviness on a relative basis but quite balanced in its own right. Flashy, spice and delicious.

La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY): My table's 8 vintage vertical at La Paulée. An absolute hedonistic pleasure with so much ripe red and black fruit that is easily managed by enough acidity and tannin, showing great balance. So much here, this is also just a baby.

A Magnificent Burgundy Afternoon (San Francisco): Ruby. Ripe, spicy, heady nose. Concentrated sweet red fruit and creosote with some citrus and sound acidity. Chocolatey finish with some remaining tannin and soil. Not too heavy or roasted. Slightly gritty, shorter finish. Like the 2004, this completely overperforms the vintage. Yes, a little New Worldish but impressive nonetheless.

(Romanée-Conti Grands-Echézeaux) The nose is deeper and darker of aspect; dusky, fecund - quite exciting. Slowly the nose 'brightens' to bring higher-toned spicy elements to the fore, aniseed and red-wrapped fruit. The palate is less obviously sweet, some separation in the mouth between the impression from the fruit vs the tannin and extract that comes through on the mid-palate. The length is haunting, slowly drying out onto your teeth. This is an enigmatic wine today, almost two personalities in one glass - if they marry this will be a superb wine - it is anyway a larger step-up from the Echézeaux than in recent years.
(Romanée-Conti Grands-Echézeaux) There won't be so many press tastings for this vintage as the average harvest across the domaine was a mere 18hl/ha - I guess I was lucky to taste this. Medium-plus colour. The nose is wide and deep with fresh berries, a little time in the glass gives up an extra spicy edge and extra purity to the fruit. In the mouth it's fat and creamy and is loaded with velvety tannin and concentrated dry extract of fruit on the finish. This is a fascinating expression of the vintage, drier and less fresh than 2004 which I prefer.
