Great showing tonight, much more accessible compared to previous bottles, still with lovely, pure red garden fruit and forest floor flavors in a style emphasizing finesse and elegance. There's still some tannic bite here, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a better, more complete wine in 3-5 years from now.
Much better than the bottle opened in July and now showing the great purity of fruit I always find in Jean Marc Morey's wines. A floral nose with aromas of fine, red fruits and mushrooms. Intense palate of strawberry fruit and sous-bois. Fine and elegant this wine, lovely example of a mature Beaune Greves.
The Beaune Greves bottling from Morey is a favorite of mine but here is another 1996 with a so-so showing. The fruit is bitter and riper than I would have expected, a far cry from the pure, light red fruit I usually find in this wine. I wonder if this, like the Cornu Corvees, needs more time to come around. I will give this another few years and check in again.
Pure red fruit with nice herbal freshness adding complexity. Medium bodied and elegant but complete, with no holes in the midpalate, and showing the high acidity of the vintage. The only drawback here for me is that the texture is a bit rustic, almost like soft sandpaper. Still, this is quite good. Paired surprisingly well with Chinese food.
