Chateau Lafite Rothschild - 20 year vertical tasting (Fribourg): Tasted blind. A very good showing for this difficult vintage. Medium ruby. Nose of dark fruit, forest, pine, cedar. Good ripeness. Enters the palate a bit lean but still with nice and polished mid mouth presence. This light but classic. An elegant showing that convinced the group. Group rank # 8/20 is an excellent rank for this lousy vintage. Readiness: Ready with a bit of decanting.
Decanted 45 mins. Deep opaque red showing little signs of ageing. Amazing nose - masses happening. Overwhelming minerality backed up by blackcurrants, violets, bitter chocolate- very perfumed, some smokiness. Palate is big - lots of very fine tannins balanced with good acid. Palate showing some minerality as well - very precise, graphite feel. Real depth with ripe blackcurrants. Long aftertaste. This is a young wine with a classic Claret feel to it. Needs time to fully open up. 2020-35.
Very nice red/blue fruits with decent ripeness. Very little structure - neither acid nor tannins. Ready to drink but little structure for aging so I doubt this will turn into something compelling. Enjoyable for its fruit but none of the complexity one should see in a Lafite, and no structure to let it gain decades of tertiaries.
Dark fruit, graphite, leather, cigar box and touch of herbs on the nose and palate. Wonderful balance and glossy texture. Open and ready to go today, but still very youthful and this will develop a lot more character with time--but it won't be too long lived. Medium finish
Wow, best bottle of this to date. Profile similar to previous best bottles, superb elegance and balance, much life ahead. A shade more complexity could make this perfect. Underappreciated vintage, a feminine style that suits my palate very well.
