Granato di media compattezza. Il naso è giocato tra frutta rossa matura (prugna, amarena, persino fragola) e note animali di cuoio, poi spezie, menta, cioccolato fondente. Bocca intensa, austera, fresca, lunga

A bit musty, a bit earthy, with mushrooms, dark burnt cherries, cedar, oak, leather and hints of carmelized blueberries. Still a bit tannic, but a nice little wine. Gets a bit fruitier as the palate progresses.

I can see Tevye singing it from the rooftops of his peasant village deep in the heart of czarist Russia, except in this context I refer to Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello, a firm that dates back to the late 1800s and is today still run by family descendents. While their name has perhaps been heard loudest from those singing their Barolo and Barbera praises, they are also known locally for their popular (but very traditional) Dolcettos and this rather unusual Freisa.
Hidden in the shadows of its vastly more popular cousin, the Nebilio, this grape almost became extinct before a few of the old traditionalists banded together to keep it alive. This bottling is from a vineyard planted in 1989 as part of this movement. At 7 years this 2006 is about peak and any you may have left in your cellar should be consumed by this time next year at the latest.
This is not a wine that was really made to last but rather to try and capture some of the delight of young nebbilio fruit without all the tannins. Still tight on the nose, on the palate it was a nice balance of fruit and leather with a bitter finish. Very traditional style with fruit done in bitter preserve style as opposed to a more sweet jammy-ness that new vintners so often seek out today.
This has slightly less overall weight than their Dolcettos if that makes any sense?

Big and chewy, with cherry and berry flavors. Might be fun to buy a few more bottles and hold them 3-4 years to see where this goes with some age. I'm not sure I would have pegged this as Freisa blind, as it has much more presence than other bottlings I've had of the grape.

Beautiful expression of the grape. Very pinot-esque with lively acidity and subtle fruit. Ceylon tea and black currant on the palate. Delightful with our meal at Osteria Morini.

TRADITION! Tradition.
