  • Fullish yellow colour and with yellow, though somewhat anonymous, fruit on the nose initially. A mild and creamy cardamon-like note develops, adding wax and hazelnut over time. Quite complex for a mere qualitätswein. The palate brings a smile. More generous and ripe in the mouth than the vintage would have me believe was achievable for a basic estate wine. No sign of the vintage acidity here. Sweet and succulent peach front - initially suggesting a lack of vitality - yet there's a delayed complexity with nutty and creamy flavours as a three hour sitting reveals. Though the years have seemingly tended to bring out the wine's simpler side, there are still complex scents and flavours here if one is prepared to sit with it for a while. Seems to be at peak. Very good plus.

  • A very youthful yellowish with a green tinge. The nose shows zesty white and yellowish fruit, but it is quite modest, even on the 2nd day. The palate is simple enough, but with it's spritzig, it's so fresh that one would think the wine was from a recent vintage. Has very good concentration and vitality, with the Schaefer signature of energy, fleet-footedness and crunch. Spritzig still evident on the 2nd day. Very good.

  • #01-05, 9% abv. Moderately advanced colour, but by no means dead. The nose is subdued, with some high-toned tart pineapple notes and a whiff of gasoline, but that's about the sum of it. The palate is incredible though. A surprisingly thick texture, with some white floral notes, as well as tart pineapple and green herbs. Although this is on the dry side of things, the honeyed palate, as well as copious fruit keeps it from becoming obnoxiously so. It's amazing that such a "lowly" wine still has so much life, over a decade on.

  • Ten years after the vintage, this is still the colour of straw. The nose falls into the tropical spectrum with mango, papaya and passionfruit. An hour later, a curious, but fleeting impression of dried salted fish. Golden fruit after a couple of hours. Lightish body, forward yellow ripe fruit. No 2004 acidity issues here. Very good plus.

  • mature wine with a changing flavor profile. Now apricots and pear flavors. Still for $15 a remarkable wine.

(Willi Schaefer QBA #1) This was much more mineral driven than #2 with beautiful purity and detail. Lots of appley fruit. Great stuff.
