  • Decanted for 4 hours before serving. Glorious ruby deep rich jewel brightness semi- transparent. Nose is glorious damp earth, cedar, damp autumnal bracken. Fully open and singing. Palate is succulent semi-confit blackberry and black currant, lots of cassis, opulent, hedonistic, multi-layered, almost a meaty gravy element to it. Totally open but years ahead of it. Heady, rich, reverberant, great length. A slightly astringent element of black tar right on the finale shows it has the tannic backbone to go for a long long time. Fantastic but just not quite top league (yet) but could get there.

  • Leather and cedar; blackberry; still tannic and young; deep and rich.

  • Full-bodied and monolithic. gravelly middle palate.

  • A near-perfect wine, perfectly ready. Still dark and opaque, with slight browning at the edges. Gorgeous, powerful, complex aromas of cedar, cassis, leather, with just a hint of herbs; still plenty of fruit, dar and rich, builds on the palate, very slightly hot; nicely balanced with only slight tannin. Very long lingering aftertaste. Amazing that it's still this outstanding after 26 years! Unfortunately, our last bottle of this vintage. Still fantastic five hours after opening and decanting it. This wine is fully mature, can still go several more years, but no reason to wait.

Addendum: still some left the following evening...hasn't declined since last night! This bodes well for its longevity. Tasted with a freshly opened '88 Lynch Bages, also a Pauillac, almost as good but not quite.

(Chateau Pichon Lalande) This was lovely. Wild and bretty and herbal like great Pichon is with good concentration, ripe and sweet tannins and nice palate presence. Lovely wine. Not earthshattering but very nice.
