1973 proved an exceptional year in Champagne resulting in wines with a wonderful depth of flavor. An incredible Champagne coming across so young and fresh that one would never guess it is over 40+ years old. Sporting a vibrant golden color, the R.D. still had a last few bubbles clawing their way to the top. On the palate there’s plenty of zippy effervescence and racy acidity. Nostalgic flavors of lemony biscuits and tart yellow fruits would lead me to believe this wine was early-mid 90s if tasted blind. The citrus really stood front and center, denying any oxidative or sherry-esque notes.

Raisins, baked apples, marzipan, vanilla, plus a slight shellfish + salty minerality. Still has plenty of acidity and structure to keep on going, but I must say, this bottle has had perfect preservation in the cellars at Bollinger. Love the rum-raisin and sherry-like quality in these ages Champagnes...

Another great dinner with Jon: Disgorged 26 May 1981. Out of condition and tired.

Past it. Might not have had the best storage? Krug 90 almost made up for the tears.
