Of the four bottles of this I purchased at auction about four and a half years ago, this is the second best (the best being the first, opened spring of 2010). We enjoyed this for about 60-90 minutes after opening before it began a rapid downhill slope. This showed wonderful notes of cedar, tobacco, and leather on the nose and palate, as well as some balsamic and a little touch of metallic flavors. Still very balanced and enjoyable, with a lovely long finish. It will be enjoyable for a few more years, but it's already a little past peak so no need to wait.

Red orange color with slight haze, and translucent. The smells are plum, strawberry, barnyard, leather, rhubarb, tobacco, orange zest, and floral notes. The tastes are sour raspberry and cherry, sour licorice candy, leather, subtle spice notes, iron and cedar. The tannins are integrated and the finish is lengthy.

Brought to Berserkerfest dinner at 2117. No specific notes, but I remember it being much livlier than it's 33 years would suggest. Still great concentration, well balanced with a bit of life left.

This wine is well into middle-age, and is certainly subject to bottle variation. This bottle has held up very well, but now is the time to open them.

1977 Caymus was tart and starting to dry out. It's holding on to life by a thread. If you have a bottle in the cellar, drink it sooner than later.
