First bottle out of a case purchased at auction. I picked the worst looking bottle with only a low shoulder fill. The cork was fully soaked and fell in when trying to pull it. Decanted just prior to serving. Very nice hue with a little browning but appropriate for age. Nice nose showing the ripe character of the 61 vintage combining plum eau-de-vie with graphite, earthy and spicy notes. nice texture with soft tannins and a long finish on tobacco and cedar notes.

My first bottle of 1961 and this was excellent. Very nice old Bordeaux - velvety, ripe black fruits, opened up nicely after a few hours. Not a lot of acidity left so probably time to drink now.

20 Mature Magnums (mostly Bdx, w/ Unico, Vogue Musigny, Marthas): From magnum. Three 1961 Bordeauxs side-by-side. The Lynch Bages (97pts) and the Pontet Canet (95pts) showed both exceptionally well. Highly complex, with all the telltale Pauillac tertiary aromas and a still intact sweet fruit core, high precision and purity and with superb freshness. Some points deducted as both wines had still slightly grippy tannins. The Calon Segur (90pts) showed highly complex and with an intriguing caramel core but was a bit wild and muddy with some strange notes too.
TN: At first full of caramel, with time then lots of dirt and some barnyard aromas come out. A bit muddy, even one or the other a bit faulty aroma pops up. On the palate this holds up a tad better, with some sweetness and lots of minerality. Very fresh. Still drinkable but without any exceptionalism. It doesn’t match the puirty, complexity or weight of the Lynch and Pontet mags in the same flight.

Magnum Rarities Tasting in Zurich (Zunfthaus zur Waag, Zurich): From Magnum: A mostly mature aroma profile with plenty of leather, tobacco and dry earth. But also clear whiffs of beef juice which created an over-mature sensation. The fruit consists of both red and dark berries. The palate better, that is fresher, aromatically but with slightly coarse tannin and the also didn‘t feel entirely harmonious.

Annual Richter All-Magnum Extravaganza: Dirty stables, leather, plums, iodine, medicinal, gets a bit better with air, but I feel this wasn't an ideal bottle (Thought it had a great level)
