3rd of 12, opened an hour, decanted 30 minutes, perfect cork and level, unchanged since bottle noted in August 22, purple rimmed, still very much on the fruit, intense and mouth covering, underlying tannic structure, fruit ripe but not baked, v persistent and involving, attractive now but substantial upside and likely upgrade when fully mature, 25+ years. F+ (18).

Four bottles from the same case and 3 different experiences. All in great condition with high neck fills and not having moved for 18 years since purchase. Key "tell" seemed to be the cork: The bottle with the toughest, densest cork was by far the best, the softest, least dense the weakest version and the two in the middle were, well, in the middle. The best version showed a pretty bouquet that had those characteristic lead pencil and lavender notes. The floral bouquet was lighter than the fairly muscular wine, though not as brutal as some have suggested -- the alcohol was not hot or prominent for any of the bottles, and there were no chocolate notes or searing tannins. Rather this is a bigger wine than I typically would expect from Comtesse, but not out of character. The middle-bottles were nice, though less complex, while the lesser bottle was simple, and a touch tart at first, though it did improve with time in the glass..

Most powerful of the Bordeaux’s drank tonight. Typical left bank Bordeaux notes.
