Perhaps the wine I was most excited to try of any that we brought for this weekend. I love this producer but have almost never seen wines older than the late 90's. I haven't had a lot of 1984 Rhone with which to compare (my guess is it was a fairly terrible year) but I still wanted to see. This was quite nice. I wouldn't say one of the major standouts (we had too much truly excellent wine for that) but it was really enjoyable to see that slightly more animal, iron, intensity in a wine with more age. Like a light veil covering things and yet it's unmistakably there. Enjoyed. Would love to see some from some of the better years.

This was given as a wry gift and promised to be the world's poopiest wine, so opened with trepidation. Actually, while there was funk that contributed to the overall experience, it was a fairly elegant expression of syrah with smoke and dried fruits dominating the nose, carried through to the palate and a lovely rosehip finish. Thanks Mike.
