  • Not my favorite vintage of Grange. It's very ripe and rich with a really deep and layered texture and there are more black fruit and black olive notes rather than the usual fresh berry spice and eucalyptus. Tastes like it's from a warm vintage that got a little overdone. Decadent and velvety so it will appeal to some more than me.

  • Dark fruit, tobacco and spice box make for a rapturous intense wine. Unrivalled.

  • Opened with a 2016 B Cellars To Kalon and what a beautiful contrast. Both were excellent in their own way but aged Grange continues to be in my wheel house. Beautiful fruit with wonderful, complimentary savory flavors. Opened 2 hours before drinking and it was singing. The only thing that kept it from being a perfect 100pts was the lack of terroir like a top notch bordeaux. A world class wine that is completely resolved and should be at peak for another 5-10 years.

  • A few observations: A) The wines undoubtedly deserve their legendary status. Few wines manage to square the circle of being intense, rich in substance and structure, while at the same time being ethereal, delicate and airy. B) The wines are all complex and very precise. With age (and/or air) the wines show a Rayas-like pure red berry fruit to die for. Other defining aromas are the minty/eucalyptus notes and especially the sweet spice I find in many Aussie Shirazes. C) The wines age at a glacial pace. Even the 40+ year old wines are still quite young and all will need a lot of decanting. D) All the wines were on a high level (except for one subpar bottle of the 2000). The winner was the magical 1982 (98pts), the epitome of elegance and balance.

TN: Medium expressive nose, more mineral driven, less ripe dark berries and less oak-derived aromas than the 2002 but also a touch less interesting and inviting. On the palate the minty notes, spices, dark red ripe fruit, herbs, espresso notes. Light and airy, round and seductive. Less substance and more developed than the which makes the wine easier to drink today. 94/95pts.

Decanting: All wines were quickly double decanted 3h before the tasting. In my experience Grange usually needs hours of proper decanting. A short 2 hour decant should be sufficient.

  • Grange vertical (Wunderbrunnen, Opfikon): Part of a 7-vintage vertical (key takeaways in the tasting story). This one was additionally aerated. intense, dark fruit of bramble berry, but brighter than 2002. Green herbs of eucalyptus and also green vegetal notes, didn‘t come across as entirely clean. Wild palate and not what I would call a sumptuous texture. Needs more integration with slightly mouthcoating tannin.
