  • slow ox, no decant. Aromas of black cherry, creme de cassis, and some herby flowers (lavender, fennel??) potpourri, spent coffee grounds, moderate bricking, the wine smells a bit sweet/porty without any booziness. In the mouth, the wine is round and opulent, tannins completely resolved. Full body, med- acid, low tannin. Pretty one noted on the palate: cherry cordial damp earth. Again, kinda porty. Seems a few years (5+) over the hill. A departure from some of the early-mid-90's Bernardus' which are still drinking well in their maturity, this is lacking that complexity. The wine seems like it made to display the later picked, fruitier, softer, early drinking style of California cabs. Dumped on day 3.

  • A little too sweet and syrupy for my liking, also maybe a bot over the hill. Seems like they picked late and used too much new oak.

    5 days later...

Ok, so maybe this wine isn't so disjointed and sloppy. Amazingly, the wine lived and improved for 5 days after leaving the bottle closed in a cool place. The vanilla/oak and cherry syrup blew off, and revealed that classic Marinus that I love. Notes of ripe fruit, herbs and firm tannins hold this wine together, while the fruit acid tells me that this wine has a very long life ahead of it.

  • Drinks much like a Napa cab, juicy red and black fruits, velvety tannins, full bodied and a shiney, opulent color. I think this wine has a few good years left in it- the wine when opened was still very fresh and vibrant; the color of the wine barely had any bricking on the edges. This one drinks a bit different than the other Marinus' of earlier years, more new world. That makes me a little sad...

  • Very flat upon opening. Opened up nicely once decanted
