  • 12x Bordeaux 1983 vs 1993: All wines tasted single blind. Not decanted. As anticipated, the 1983 vintage prevailed in our comparative tasting, scoring 8 to 2 wins against the 1993 vintage, with two ties. The structured, classic ’83s exhibited greater depth and harmony compared to the ‘93s, which tended to be simpler, sometimes slightly green and dry, or at their best, fresh and light. However, in both vintages, aside from a few notable labels, many wines were evidently beyond their peak. The standout was, unsurprisingly, the Margaux (94pts). Tasting the some of the same ’83s a second time a few days later with decanting showed a marked improvement, highlighting the need of aeration.

TN: The nose is muted, leading to a palate that’s somewhat simple, featuring faint fruit, crushed rocks, and minerality. It’s quite clean, with fine tannins and good tension, yet it’s marred by a green and drying character. This wine is clearly past its peak, 84pts. The 1983 won the duel, but at 88pts isn‘t a standout either.

  • Bordeaux 1983 vs 1993 face-off: Dusty rock minerality, fine base notes of underwood and leathery elements. Blueberry, red and dark cherry fruit provide for a complex fruit profile. Full bodied palate, some heat unfortunately, otherwise acceptable balance and felt like early days given the structure. But leans towards unripe in terms of fruit.

  • Sadly this one time gem was misplaced in the back of the "cave" and so the window to enjoy it was badly missed. The bottle was still sound, but it had lost all of its structure and fruit. The occasional reminder to drink up!

  • From a magnum for my daughter's 25 birthday last night at a very fine and upscale vegetarian restaurant she picked. Distinct onion peel color showing. A bit thin and shy at first. With 30 minutes of air the wine began to open and display that unique, firm Saint-Estephe form so well known to this Chateau. Not a fruit bomb to be sure, thank God, but honest character and a fine complement to the cuisine it was served with. Not a bad example, at all, and it was enjoyed by everyone.
