  Medium-dark red. Strong nose of heavy toast oak, dark chocolate, black raspberry, prune, and an acetic element. Medium acid, medium-low tannin. The oak comes to the fore increasingly here, both with age in the bottle and with air, once opened. Gobs of very ripe, baked raspberry pie lead the flavors and tangy acids finish up. Some finishing heat at the back of the throat distracts from an otherwise rich, ripe and enjoyable zin. Bottle #12 of 12

  This one doesn't seem to be holding up as well as the Rocky Terrace from the same vintage. As fruit diminishes in both, this one had less to start with. Still shows a good tannic nip, but with less fruit to provide the counterbalance, this shows signs of decline / drying out. I'll revisit again tomorrow to see how it evolves. For now, it's pleasant, but a tad disappointing given my last outing which surprisingly was over 3 years ago. I'm afraid I may have missed the peak on this one. I still haven't cracked the nut in terms of predicting Zin aging curves, and seem to be disappointed more often than not with stuff over 5 years from vintage. The Rocky Terrace is a notable exception, as are the occasional Turleys.
  
  Update: even with a short 30-45 minutes opened, some of the harsh edges round off, and this becomes a much more pleasurable wine. That said, I'm still popping most of my remaining bottles in the short term, quick decant and ready to go. Further: after 8 hours, further improvement but difficult to evaluate after a full day of tasting. Seems smoother, but at the same time a bit hot. I'll stick with the idea that these should be consumed sooner than later. FWIW, the improvement is more noticeable on the nose, which has become much more rich and aromatic. The midpalate has likewise benefited, but the heat that has developed on the finish creates some new distractions.

A bit medium toast oak pronounced in the mouth, with heaps of wild raspberry and to a lesser extent chocolate and herbs. Finishes a tad hotter than expected, still long and rich. Bottle #11 of 12.
