Premier Cru Table (The Fifth Avenue Hotel): 03466/16313. Still in the same phase as three years ago, no rush to open, very good balance with hint of woodiness in the red fruit. 93-94

Wines of the Gods (House of AC and JC): Component of DRC Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux vertical. Medium ruby with black currant and subtle wet cardboard on nose. Dense tart alpine strawberry palate, with power - towering over the 2006 and 2007 vintages. Bigger palatal presence with subtle smoke on finish. Best 2025-2040.

Opened and left to rest for a good hour and the wine was singing from the pop. Kept on evolving too in the glass and Nicol who somehow left some in her glass for the end of the meal (wise woman) was rewarded with an even more impressive nose. Soft dark , smoky edge to it but mostly red fruits, soft strawberry and lovely rose on the nose. The palate shows lovely evolution but still very much fruit driven but soft and nothing is overdone here which for a 2005 is easy task. An impressive 96+

(Romanée-Conti Echézeaux) A heavy nose of ample cream-edged fruit and new oak melds well with a fairly forward smoky, stemmy note. The plate lacks for a little poise with a ‘whoosh’ of fruit that is admittedly borne on lovely acidity. There’s plenty of oak on the finish too - though it’s a long finish. The scent clings well to the glass. Overall the aromatics, and to a certain extent the flavours too, are rather sweet, facile and vanilla-oak edged - indeed the ripeness is not even shaded by Romanée-Conti - but it’s characterful and quite athletic too. Needs 2-4 years to shed that facile, oak-influenced character but this has all the material to become really super.

Had some reductive stink still, this can age. Pure red fruited palate, lots of drive and depth. (2202/16313)
