Three Dinners: Popped and poured. This was unbelievably fresh and enjoyable. Great nose with fresh fruit. Literally bursting with flavor on the palate. Excellent texture and balance. Nice acidity on the long finish. What a pleasant surprise.
East Village Riesling Extravaganza (New York): Incredibly pale yellow colour. Tastes as young as it looks, tightly wound and austere initially, but opening out with air to reveal grapefruit, lemon and green apple over savoury smoky and earthy notes and a bed of stony minerals. This is an 18 year old wine?
The Great Terroirs of Domaine Zind Humbrecht (Raleigh, NC): The double pour of the flight and an interesting one as the 2 bottles showed very differently, one at peak, one more muted. From the "at peak" bottle: Light gold in color with grapefruit and medium petrol in a medium bodied package. Slightly off dry. "My #2 smells better than your #2!" ( you had to be there ). 50+12+13+8+8 = 91
Dinner at Hampton St. Vineyard, Columbia, SC. Light gold in color and filled with wet stones and tons of minerals. Very dry but with a great richness to balance it off. Really enjoyable. The finish lingers for a long time. With time in the glass, the nose continued to open. We had this bottle in the car for a 4 hour drive followed by an afternoon in a cooler on ice. How much better would it had shown if we did not mistreat the bottle this way? Not bad for a supposed off vintage from our favorite vintner! 50+12+12+8.5+8.5 = 91.
