I had major doubts going into this given the reputation of the vintage and the half bottle format. But this underdog came to play. Wet leaves, prune, church incense, and umami are held together by a backbone of bright acidity that prompts just a slight mouth pucker. No sign of brett here or anything else off putting. This is near the end of its life, but living out its last years with immense grace and dignity.

This wine had been sitting in my cellar for many years and I thought I would gamble with it when I met some friends for a December tasting of a few 20+ year-old CNPs. Amber in the bowl, orange on the rim. Threw some sediment on the decant. Nose was soft, some red fruit, leather and very little brett. In the mouth, it was SOFT, tannins all gone. Still in balance, just a hint of alcohol on the medium finish to remind you this is a CNP.

This bottle restored my faith that Beaucastel can make clean wines. Not a hint of brett. Shows it's age with a rusty color. Nose of leather and barnyard, but again, not brett, just really clean and pure. Rather full on the palate with plenty of structure. I don't think the flavors will improve, but the tannins are still noticeable yet resolved. Finishes clean and long.

With Michael Lehmann at Singer & Foy vertical tasting of Beaucastel. Medium ruby. Lighter color than the last wine. Nose lighter than the others. Faintly fruity. In the mouth, pretty good fruit. Black cherry. Definitely a cherry finish. Nice wine for a bad year. 4-9-15-6: 84/100.

Brought by a friend to an "open that bottle" evening. A bit past its prime. As it opened it drank better. Not much fruit, stills a very nice wine.
