  • Zombie wines of North London (Terra Rossa): Orange in colour, and no fizz. Unpleasant nose, quite aggressive and volatile. Really nutty and intense on the palate - rancio, baby! But I wouldn't want to drink more than a small glass of this.

  • Zombie Wines at Terra Rossa (Terra Rossa, Islington): Bottle superficially looks in good condition, the foil is good, and the cap and top of the cork are good too. Could this be a miracle? Sadly not, the cork has minimal resistance, and although the top 4mm seems ok, the rest is rather shrivelled, brown (no black), and a little sludgy at the bottom. The wine is a dark amber, clearly no fizz, and actually smells OK-ish. A whiff of sherry but no more. That said, it no longer delivers a Champagne experience! The best I can say is that it is not undrinkable, nor wholly unpleasant, and as an educational experience really quite interesting. It has nutty flavours, and a certain sweetness on the palate with quite a long finish. The oxidisation continues apace once opened, and despite trying to blend it with a bottle of Pol Roger NV (2017 base) to pep it up, all that really happens is that you get a fizzy sherried champagne which was pretty pointless and I preferred just to take small sips of it 'neat' so to speak. The storage conditions throughout its long life are unknown; we set our expectations low and thus were not disappointed. Massively over the hill, but also remarkable that a 50 year old bottle of champagne isn't utterly dead and can still be drunk with no ill effects.
