Rich, full-bodied, jammy and a lot younger tasting than the year on the label would suggest. But enough about my ex wife! Ha!
Nose: a hint of cedar, mixed with an ever-so-slight note of eucalyptus. Some mushroom-like funkiness and a candied fruit, reminiscent of a well-balanced, aged fine or grand champagne cognac.
Palate: This wine is phenomenal. Cedar, fruit juice, the slightest hint of warm citrus, and definitely notes of tobacco. Am I tasting faint echoes of bubble gum?
Finish: Smooth as silk after it envelopes the palate on the initial entry. Brief, yet memorable, like my first marriage.

Very dark, opaque red. Dense. Nose of bell pepper, licorice. My husband gets a floral nose with charcoal and toast. Silky smooth mouth feel. Some bell pepper. Very rich flavor. Still has some tannins. I get some metal, stewed vegetables, after 5 hours. We had it open 3 hours before we tired it. It continued to open up all evening. Went great with steak in garlic butter.
1997 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Retrospective (Omaha, NE): Presented single-blind; no formal notes. This had a really compelling mix of fruit and non-fruit notes; multifaceted, balanced. Superb structure. Bordeaux-like. Called this “Insignia”. This was my favorite of the flight and the most complete wine in the line-up. Drinking well now and should hold that way well through 2027.

A short decant was plenty. Lovely with Christmas dinner.
