This pristine looking bottle (Cruse), had a very high shoulder fill. The cork was in fantastic condition and the wine had dropped a ton of sediment.
It had a medium/light red center and orange rims. The medium intensity nose put forth cherries, cola, minerals, and some cellar must.
In the mouth, this wine had a medium/light texture like an older Rioja. Not surprisingly, this had the boys guessing non-cabernet based wines. It was light and long with great balance and light but crisp tannin.
Overall, this was a very nice wine but there was a slightly sour quality to it that kept me from scoring it higher.
The colour is still dark, nose of leather, meaty, sous bois, sandalwood... still very concentrated dark fruit, leather, sweet tannins, the acidity dissapears after 10 min, is even much better after 30 min slow ox, amazing!
Pristine bottle with vts/ts fill. Color like a Bordeaux from the 70's: Still noticeable red, and very bright. All kinds of tertiary aromas: forest floor, leather, but also a flowery element – very fresh and vigorous; similar in the mouth, complex, long, and first and foremost with very lively and fresh acidity. Some dusty tannins, long. With time in the glass it became sweeter, no decline through the night.
Ruby with brick tints, this wine did not look 63 years old. Its held up better than Raquel Welch. The perfume as a complicated melange of coconut, smoke, caramel, coffee and tobacco with hints of earth. Very concentrated and still young. Your palated was soothed with a gentle bath of fresh strawberry, cassis, and ripe, black cherry. The sublime wine finished with a compelling sweet, syrupy texture that seemed to remain in your taste receptors for ages. The wine continued improving in the glass for over two hours. This is what great wines are all about. Now, if only I can find some of this magic elixir when I get home. I imagine 05, with its selection and better wine making skills will be this good or better at 60 years of age. I wonder if anyone reading this will be around to find out?
