La Tache dinner (The Boardl Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): Initially pine resin/VA and a hint of madeira. A bit of advanced nose, remnant of strawberry. The palate also shows a bit of oxidation. With air, the wine regained the composure becoming very similar to the 50 but not quite, a bit more noticeable strawberry fruits, perfume, tree bark and coffee. Soft and round palate, a hint of madeira, toffee, no sign of tannins and medium finish. I believe I was the only one who liked the wine. I love to drink another bottle but doubt my chance.

hockingly good; delicious mature fruit, full body, finishes a little dry and is definitely a candidate for the best of 12 53`s this evening with about 20 more to go tomorrow night.

(Domaine de la Romanee-Conti La Tache) This was some sick wine. A book could be written. A movie could be made. There could be a short series of articles for six Sundays in the New York Times on this wine. Man this was good wine. The nose was just perfect. So much. Panoply of spice. Just a bazaar. Like you were there. So vivid. This wine's nose just transported you somewhere else. Palate was just so damn youthful. Could not believe it. Concentrated and powerful with great elegance. Long and the flavors were so clear. I mean long. This finish was on and on and on. It just stuck. Wow. I am glad I got to taste this wine. I am trying to think what has been better but this really stomps alot of shit I have had. It's nice to be a wine person and taste something and be like "I didn't know it could get this good." Well it can. And I can't wait for the next bottle like this.

A Mid-1980's Tasting of Twenty One Vintages of La Tâche (1945-1980) (Private residence, San Francisco): Very pale. Fragrant and terrific perfumed nose which is marred by cardboardy cork-drat. Transiently delicious, still has significant tannin. Turns vinegary and harsh, and falls apart very quickly. I would love to see a sound bottle of this, which should be ethereal.
