  • Winebid purchase 10 years ago. Low shoulder fill with signs of seepage. Cork was completely saturated. Low expectations.

This was still surprisingly good, though. Nice color with no hint of browning. Nose and palate were solid with some nice fruit and complexity. A touch of earthy bitterness in the finish prevented this from being scored 90.

  • I’ve been drinking some older bottles in the cellar that primarily came from my in-law cellar that were purchased in the 70s and early 80s. This was one of those bottles- the fill did not inspire confidence just above mid shoulder and the cork was soaked and a bit crumbly. But the wine smelled good and has a nice ruby red color lightening at the rim but no brown or anything. This is all about the fruit - the tannins are pretty much resolved and it is smooth. Raspberry, black tea, a little forest and earth with a really long finish. Don’t judge a book by its cover- taste it first! Other recent examples of this were a somewhat decrepit looking 1978 DRC Richebourg (WOW) and a 1977 Mondavi reserve (different zip code but still good in its own right)

  • Expectations were pretty low given the age of this wine. We opened on Xmas day. The tawny color of age was there, but the nose belied the color. The bouquet began with hints of violet and soft undertones of lavender, almost herbal, then the bold raisin and prune came through. The taste was fresh, though, like a Bordeaux 1/2 it's age. What a surprise and pleasure.

  • At home with K at dinner (tomato-garlic risotto). Still darkly colored; ruby with lighter rim. Lots of fruit in the nose with an unfortunate wet cardboard component. Firm fruit in the mouth. Solid, sturdy red without much finesse or complexity. Still tannic. 5-9-15-6: 85/100. Later, drying out. 5-9-12-5: 81/100.
