So, opened this with the intent to have it with a couple of American F1 wagyu steaks. Initially it was really thin and somewhat astringent. So much so, that I opened a 2014 Cade Estate as a replacement - if I think of it I’ll drop a note for that as well.
Anyway, after dinner and with this sitting open for 4 hours, I came back to just see what it was like. I was surprised. The astringency had blown off and what remained was stewed plums and prunes and, for me, a faint blue cheese aroma - don't ask me how. On the palate, not a lot of primary fruit but the plums and prunes came through with a bit of leather and some additional weight.
I received this wine as part of year long mystery case promotion directly from the winery during Covid. And maybe, I shouldn’t have been surprised as I opened a 95 Chard from that same program that initially turned me off but later blew me away and changed my perception of aged whites. If you have this wine, open it and give it time. Hopefully it will surprise you like it did me.
Cheers!

Warning - potential user bias. I am a huge fan of ACVV.
We opened this following a 1984 Laurel Glen that was also an amazing bottle of wine.
The surprise was how much substance this still had left. It could have lasted another several years in the bottle. Tannins were still there and provided a perfect backbone to the experience. Color is beautiful, and the nose - very expressive. Fully integrated wine, fruity, lively, truly amazing. We could not get over how good it was.
Too bad this is my last bottle of this vintage.
Best to all, David/

Medium expressive nose displaying bright red fruit, red currant, cherry, a hint of cassis, lead pencil and mineral. Beautifully integrated youthful palate, finely layered subtle red fruit, silky, slightly lean, bright acidity, good mineral presence and a medium to long clean red fruit driven finish. This is a beautifully balanced, not too ripe style of California Cabernet.

From a bottle purchased upon release and cellared under ideal conditions, this deep garnet wine continues to serve up red currants, baking spices, cocoa, earth and pipe tobacco. Medium-bodied, freshly acidic, seamlessly alcoholic (13%) and with melted tannins, it is layered and dense on the mid-palate. Finishing long and smooth, this fully mature Cabernet remains very impressive. Well-cellared bottles should hold up for at least another 3-4 years. Drink now-2020.

On the decline. Nose of blueberry compote. Still lots of fruit, just a little bit of tertiary mushroom funk, but a great long finish.
