Burgundy-Report

(Romanée-Conti Echézeaux) Bright medium, medium-plus cherry-red. The nose jumps out of the glass just a little less athletically than the 1er Cru – there’s a hint more spice and a deeper, tighter, more precise aspect to the fruit. There’s a real step-up when tasting this wine, almost reminiscent of the Montrachet and it’s ebullient acidity. Intensity and a real burst of excitement from the mid-palate onwards. Nicely handled tannins. This is a very good effort, certainly more intense than the 1er Cru but I’m not sure if it’s any longer.

Rockss and Fruit

(DRC Echezeaux) At first this was slightly reticent on the nose with just hints of spice, menthol, mint and pine needles. But after around 10 minutes this really opened in the nose and became very expressive with lots of fruit intermingling with the foresty mineral scents. A slight hint of game was there after more aeration. Very elegant palate again with dazzling purity. Purity was a common theme among all the wines today. Palate of red fruits and a good dose of cinnamon with some burly tannins. Ripe burly tannins though carrying a payload of fruit. Backwards of course but a very impressive effort from what is sometimes called the weakest of the DRC's. A step up from 2001 and 2000.
