  • Birth year wine for my 32nd birthday.

This was admittedly an experiment as even with good storage this wine is well past it’s prime.

We were hoping for something good but it was disappointing. The wine was flat and had no legs. There was a surprising amount of fruit left but after 30 minutes decanted it had the barnyard taste.

We ended up pouring it out and switching to a few other bottles for the night:

Marcelo Pelleriti’s 2018 Cab Franc, which I can’t recommend enough.

A 2016 Freemark Abbey Cab Sauvignon, which was overpriced.

2018 Chateau Coudray Montpensier Chinon Le Grand Bouqueteau - excellent QPR.

  • Saturday, April 08, 2000 Okay, so this is not the best or highest quality Jos Phelps produces. I don’t care what anyone says, this is a wonderful wine. At first I was leery of it as the cork broke and the small piece, once extracted, was very soft and suggested cork rot was setting in. On the initial pour, it smelled of musty cork. Wine was left to sit for an hour. When retasted, cork was still slightly evident, but the wine was improving. Color of ’deep, deep’ garnet (per Deneen). No brickish tinge at all. Initial nose of soft berry fruit and leather. The soft fruit flavors of bing cherry and blue berry are supported by a slight aftertaste of leather and mint. Later the flavors gave way to leather and cedar. Very long finish, lasting minutes - not an overpowering finish, but a lingering nuance of the wine. A dusty dry finish suggesting strong background of firm tannins. Mouthfeel of medium weight paired nicely with the wine reduction sauce with bacon over beef fillet accompanied with wild rice and asparagus. (Sauce would be better with a younger wine.) 4/8/00
