  • The 1945 Lagrange takes about 20 minutes to unfold - amazingly, it’s still reticent on the nose at first. If that’s surprising based on the age, the dark color suggests it shouldn’t be. The style of this wine plays to the 45 stereotype of really being a big brute. There’s a reluctant but dense raspberry coulis nose with a touch of blueberry, mint, and plenty of dusty, warm dark earth, but you’ve got to work for it a bit - it’s serious rather than generous with a strict character. A steely mineral, beef blood character is added in the palate and, though the weight is medium/medium minus it’s still got gripping tannin. Yet the winsome red fruit and brisk acid make it a pleasurable drink. Serious, characterful - if a little angular. Best with 20-90 minutes of air.
