  • Fully mature with some vestiges of fruit. I got my Bdx fix from the aromatics with lots of cedar, earth and tobacco notes. Nicely balanced with most of the action on initial entry through the mid-palate leading to a modest cedar-infused finish showing a bit of dryness on the tail-end. This medium-bodied wine is unlikely to improve further but will probably hold where it is for a few years still. An hour of air brought the wine to its best. Enjoyed with some aged cheese.

  • Takes some time in the decanter to get going, but once it does it thoroughly beguiles with a fresh, minty, herbal intensity. Crisp, sappy, classy, lifted and intense on the palate with hints of lavender and eucalyptus. Lithe in structure but filled with an herbal-infused savoriness that gives it a real presence. Very long. This fills up the sense while sustaining an admirable weightlessness. 93-94 pts.

  • Decanted 30 min. This wine is probably passed its peak but still enjoyable. On the nose, tobacco, dry leaves and red cherry. There is some acidity to give it freshness and the tannins are well integrated.

  • 20 Vintages of Figeac (1985-2019): All wines tasted blind. A few observations: 1) Compared many other right bank peers, Figeac never fell into the trap of producing very high ripeness/high extraction wines. The low(er) Merlot content plays a role, but the wines clearly speak of a conscious decision of not going there. But in the 2000s the fruit profile is darker and only more recent vintages go back to the beautiful bright red fruit. 2) The hype is real: The level of greatness this winery achieves since the 2015 vintage is stunning. The complexity, delineation, purity and textural depth are miles ahead of what the company produced before. 3) Figeac shows that it is among the 15 best wines produced in Bordeaux today and considering the En Primeur prices, probably only Montrose and Pichon Lalande have an equally good value proposition in this top group. 4) Winner was the 2019 (97pts) with an unmatched purity and depth, ahead of the 2015 (96pts) and a stunning 2018 (96pts) which tells a lot about how well they coped with the hot vintage.

TN: Candied red berries, smoky minerality and earthy notes on the medium expressive nose, some bretty notes. On the palate brighter red berries, herbs, crushed rocks, some toasty notes. All in all quite good. With time though, the fruit disappears. The tannins are still noticeable and have some edges but nothing time can’t solve, the acidity is too pronounced, though.

Decanting: Not decanted, decanting is not advised, best right after opening.

  • Clear garnet with a rusty veneer divulging its age. Needed about 30 minutes to deliver its full medium-intensity aromatics of sous-bois, iodine, tobacco leaf, and mushroom. Mid-weight tertiary palate with some mouth-watering acidity on entry, sour cherry and dried fruits on the mid-palate and a medium length grippy finish. Not a blockbuster but a very enjoyable fully mature wine which has probably past its apex and should be drunk sooner than later, IMO.
