  • As eccentric as should be expected from a Cornelissen wine. Fully mature and earthy in many ways, but yet fresh red cherry seems to magically appear now and then. Long and broad textures with elegant tannins and good length. I wish it were slightly cleaner, but that can't be expected in this style. Best in its first hour open, then a slow decline began. Combination of 2008 and 2009 Nerello Mascalese.

  • This was in the glass for an hour by the time I took the note. The color looks very much like a dark Rose, with slight bits of brown. On pop and pour the nose was a bit funky, but that's to be expected as these always take air to come around. By an hour in the funk is mostly gone, now just showing high tones of raspberries, briar, and acid poured on top. It smells quite lovely. It's like a middle school dance in my mouth, where everyone's dancing and having a blast but they don't really know what they're doing. There's lots of berries and tons of acidity. The finish is all acid with some funky cranberries, wet grape leaves (dolmas). The wine started out quite funky but after some time it just became a normal, elegant, pretty with, perhaps with a bit more sentiment than usual. For my next bottle I will definitely open it at least two hours in advance. My last sip was most certainly my best.

  • Just because some crazy dude decides to live on the side of a volcano and make indifferent wine the way they used to make it doesn’t make it good...or drinkable, and don’t let any Rimmerman or any shitey wine critic tell you otherwise. There’s a reason modern winemaking includes hygiene, reasonable use of sulphites and application of other chemicals and processes to ensure safety, quality, stability, etc., etc. There’s too much great wine being made today to waste time, money and effort on laziness masquerading as “retro”. Seriously, do not waste a centime, cent, euro, pound, yuan or any other currency on this guy’s phony story.

The wine is unstable, full of fizz and some type of volatile acidity others have described as “turpentine”. Not sure what it is but it hardly reminds me of what I imagine Cana would have tasted like, transformed water would be better, I’m sure. It’s sour, and bitter with I’m sure sticks and wildlife crap and who knows what else in it. I have a bottle of this guy’s $140 wine that’s supposed to be more like real wine. I ain’t holding my breath.

(MunJebel ROSSO 6 Cornelissen) Cornelissen #2 Dear Friends, Ok folks, I'm not going to beat around the bush – this set is painfully limited this year (only 200+ cases were produced of the MunJebel Rosso 6 and only 60 cases of the Magma). Requests from around Europe alone would over-sell this lot by 3-fold so I'm not holding out hope for an allocation of significance. To wet your whistle, I will tell you that Frank believes the MunJebel Rosso 6 is the finest wine he’s ever made (red or white)...that is, until the new vintage of Magma is discussed. There his eyes glaze over... Both wines are EXTREMELY LIMITED – my guess is only 2-3 dozen cases of MunJebel Rosso to split up between all 50 states and something like 5 cases of Magma. That’s as limited as it gets. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for one of a kind style, fascinating complexity and inspiration to an emerging generation of winemakers around the globe. This parcel is directly from the source with perfect provenance: 2009 (2008) Frank Cornelissen MunJebel Rosso 6 (Etna) - Frank: “A rich and fragrant wine. This year in the final blend, there is more of the aged wine, which is something I’ve been trying to accomplish. This is approximately 900 litres of 2008 and 1.300 of the 2009 vintage. A classic, traditional Nerello Mascalese with tannins and sweetness, the old way - maybe the best wine I’ve ever made – so complete”. (I nursed a bottle of this wall-of-stone-painted-red for five consecutive days and it’s another game-changer from Cornelissen. This is about more than just an eccentric diversion – this is a real wine that drips (steams?) Etna from every pore of its rocky, cement-like foundation that’s been layered with slabs of the purest cherry red fruit and fresh tobacco notes. A highly charged wine that remains self-assured and unforced - with nothing but time on its side. By day five, I had enough of spitting and promptly consumed the remainder (I'm sure it would have been just as good on day 6). Serious and memorable – JR) 2008 Frank Cornelissen Magma (rosso/Etna) - Frank: “A profound wine, rich and elegant at the same time. The character of the vineyard Barbabecchi Soprano is expressed to it's full extent. I have to say, I opened a bottle last night for journalists and I couldn’t keep the laughter from bubbling over. I surprised myself with this one – outrageous, such length, such reflection and so true to The Mountain”. (I still believe this is liquid mountainside and not really “wine” at all. That about sums it up - JR) To order either of the above: niki@garagistewine.com This parcel is set to depart from Sicily – it will arrive in the summer (please check OARS for local pick up after Aug 1st).
