  • Got into this one the same day I brought it home. Left upright at room temperature for about four hours before decanting.

Color is garnet with no bricking. Clarity was compromised. Probably due to impatience and some stirring during transport. Sound cork showed minimal color up to 1cm.

Nose is a little lean. Cherry and new leather. Palate is where I enjoyed this most. Cherry, dried cherry, new leather, stone, licorice and still some tannic grip.

Quite enjoyable still, though for me there is no basis for comparison.

I'll enjoy my next bottle soon. Drink.

  • Popped poured decanted in glass; initially surprisingly fruit forward nose of candied cherries; tart tannins; having with beef stroganoff; may update with later notes as it decants.

  • Required a fair amount of air.
Upon opening it was barnyard and unpleasant. Two hours in the decanter and it lost its funkiness and gained a sweet fruited profile with an incredibly soft palate. A delicate cherry and raspberry with a faint potpourri. That being said, drink now. It felt like it was on the decline.

  • It’s been a good 5 years since we had this last ( Papies 91-92) and th Ewing continues to deliver. A bit more spicy, more herby and less heavy on the fruit and generally on 1998 these guys made one of th Elmore elegant CdP away from the Parker doctrine of use the ripe year to make a bomb ( 2007 we feel has it too in many producers and unsurprisingly not at Clos Des Papes) . Well mannered and well aged and and easy 92.

(Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape) Bricked medium dark red violet color; tar, cigar box, green bean, green bean casserole nose; tasty, tobacco, cigar box, smoke, mineral, green bean casserole palate; medium-plus finish (nowhere near as good as previous outings; is this a faulty bottle or is the wine falling apart?) 90+ points
