    (DRC Richebourg) The 1971 DRC Richebourg that followed seemed to take it up a notch, and we could thank The Imperial Cellar for sourcing it originally. This was a perfect bottle, everything one could want from a bottle of this wine. Menthol sex immediately came to mind. Bouillon, cherry, tomato and wintergreen lit up the room with its bright nose. It was in 98-point territory, and the palate obliged with a rich, saucy and jammy personality. Yum. However, it, too, dried just a bit, taking it down a couple points. The transformation wasn’t nearly as dramatic as the Ponsot, although I felt that I was somewhat responsible by over-swirling. The wine got me so excited that I couldn’t help but swirl it around and around and around. Mental note – don’t overswirl older wines! Its red fruit changed to black, and cola emerged along with cassis. Gil closed it out with ‘Indian spice’ (96).

    (DRC Richebourg) What would be a Big Boy way to ring in the New Year? Twin jeros of 1971 DRC, of course. Insert your own bomb sound here. Those that have known me for a long time know my love affair with 1971 DRCs is no secret. Just because it is my birth year is mere coincidence! The 1971 DRCs are spectacular, and these two jeros cemented that fact at the bottom of the Hudson River for any of those that denied it :). The 1971 DRC Richebourg began 2011 in fine fashion with an inviting nose of old yet fresh Burgundy fruit. Dank red fruits danced about in a muddy nose of tomato, rose and sea salt. The jero was a little dirty at first, but that is usually a good thing after midnight. The palate opened up into a saucy mouthful of red fruits with a light caramel coating.     (DRC Richebourg) Dueling jeros were next; jeros of 1971 DRC Grands Echezeaux and 1971 DRC Richebourg. Like whoaaaaa. They were both fantastic bottles, and on this night, I gave the slightest of edges to the Grands Echezeaux, and Air Jordan, the Duchess of Bohr, agreed with me. They both were long and rich; both full of tar, rose and leather; both menthol on skates…but the Grands Ech had more power and stuffing. Obviously, this is not a universal occurrence when these two are served together, especially jeros, which probably have been served together maybe once, twice, three times a lady in the course of history? Who knows, could it have been the first time ever? History check, please. Airplane Eddie found the Richebourg ‘cleaner.’

    (DRC Richebourg) The last wine of the night was another special DRC out of magnum, a 1971 DRC Richebourg. It, too, was superlative, showing the rose, leather, game, iron, minerals and tender citrus that it should. More forward and caressing than the RC, it was still closer to its youth than it was its old age. It was singing a sweet song that was music to anyone’s lips that got to taste this nectar. I plan on drinking as many 1971 DRCs as I possibly can for the rest of my life

    (DRC Richebourg) A duo of 1971 DRCs was next, beginning with a 1971 DRC Richebourg. Did I mention that these are a few of my favorite things already? This had a ‘wow’ nose, an incredible nose, with the rose, the menthol, the mint, the rust, the game, the earth, the oil, the leather, the tobacco and the spine of an extra special Burgundy. This was a quintessential, classic beauty. Wilf dryly complimented the wine (and took a small shot at my beloved 1971s), saying that there was less rot than usual. I found the wine sweet and gamy with amazing rose flavors. The wine was slightly softer on the palate but amazing nonetheless

    (DRC Richebourg) It was a bad night for DRC Richebourg, as a 1971 was (DQ). No one cared. Thats how you have to be with old wines. If you get an off bottle, its on to the next. Of course, when you have thirty wines, that helps ease the pain, but so does a good backup or two for less monumental occasions.

    (DRC Richebourg) had an incredibly complex nose as the wines continued to build in dramatic fashion. Rose, earth, leather, stems and tobacco were all present. Its palate was long, and there were nice flavors of earth and leather, but what really set this wine apart was its extraordinary acidity and how the wine kept gaining in the glass
