Wow. Nose had perfume, flowers, blue fruit, black fruit, prunes and tangerine fruit. It had tremendous density and intensity. The palate was very powerful, firing all cyclinders. It has at least 15 years left. It has just entered its drinking window.
Impromptu Year End Dinner (L'Apicio): Sigh... my last 1988 Gaja Sperss. This was the 1st vintage from this vineyard, and the previous bottle I opened was in 1999. My notes from then said open in 15 years, so here we were. FREAKIN' GORGEOUS. Right out the gate, but gets better as it breathes for 2-3 hours, with lovely delicate rose petals, light red fruits, earth and mineral notes, and a long, elegantly haunting finish. I can still taste it the next day, like a ghost of a wonderful memory.
After bottle decanting for 1 hour - lovely expressive nose of black cherry, violets, spices and a hint of mature forest floor. Still fresh but ready to drink. Lovely, elegant, classic refined barlolo with dark fruit flavors, minerals a a nice saline hint. There is just enough fruit to balance the lively acidity and significant but refined tannins. It was still getting better after 2.5 hours of air. Very nice and worth the price if you can find some that has been properly cellared. 94 points.
Remarkable bottle with 10 years left in it. The wine had plenty of fruit present with a cherry praline flavor, earl grey tea, loam earth and a touch of cinnamon. Deeply complex and a remarkable wine that was everything you expected it to be.
