Lovely, classic claret. Maturing garnet color. Light brick rim. The nose is a combination of swampy cassis fruit, cinnamon and wet bark. Nice complexity in a reserved manner - showing just a hint of opulence to make things interesting. Medium bodied with a resolved palate. The fruit is sweet throughout but there is a touch of underripe fruit as well. Not too much but it’s there. Some will love that aspect while it will turn others off. Average depth. I’m sounding a bit harsh as I am really enjoying this wine. It’s just not technically better than very very good. If you like old school Bordeaux, this is a good choice. As good a time to drink as any. Should hold. (92)

At a point where everything comes together in a harmonious way! Sweet, a touch spicy currant fruits caressing your palate, offering a lengthy finish! Just pop and pour, no need to do any decanting in my view, just straight the bottle for a week before you uncork it, that's the best advice I can offer!

13% alcohol. CS 82%, M 18% according to Parker, who gave a measly 86-88 grade to this wine, later revised to 89 (all this courtesy of Farr). One of the most recognisable labels in the world, really gorgeous in a slightly over the top way, I hope they keep it forever. Excellent cork with barely 2 mm of wine penetration. Opened for 30mn, then decanted for 45mn. The colour is medium dark with some thinning and the onset of bricking at the edge of the rim. The nose shows tobacco leaves and some ash-like component (not in a bad way); there is blackcurrant as well, but it is slightly subdued. There is some strictness in the mouth, but plenty of freshness too, including menthol in the finish. Very juicy too; the oak is fully digested, and whatever tannins are left are soft. This is certainly a food wine, and very satisfying it is with rack of lamb. A bit like a hypothetical cross between Léoville-Barton and Sociando-Mallet, and I do not mean this in a negative way at all. Another few years won't do it any harm. This particular bottle was won as a result of a bet on Who-You-Know winning a second term, which must add some subconscious sweetness to it, but I have tried hard to ignore this aspect in my tasting note.

2002 Claret Horizontal (Piccolino, Exchange Square): Graphite, cigar box and a leafy capsicum quality that charms. A little tomato leaf / summer greenhouse too. Palate rich, showing resolved tannins and some leather. Yum my 3rd favourite wine of the night
