Northern Rhone night: Didn’t expect much from this given that it was a torrid vintage in northern Rhone, but turned out to be the biggest surprise of the night. Brooding nose with coffee notes on the nose, silky and poised on the palate with a lingering finish. Wonderful balance. One of the best old Guigals I’ve tried and that’s saying something!

This time more settled bottle the first was just airflow in so perhaps some bottle shock, very balanced with a great nose. Resolved tannins but still have some grip. Overall a very nice drink but just as mentioned a little thin to be scored more highly.

Deep red. Not much on the nose on first opening. This is a big wine, very meaty, chewy, and especially tannic, but it has a nice mineral/acidic quality to provide balance. I find it very pleasing now (as someone generally happy with plenty of tannin), but at the moment structure dominates, and I just wonder if in the long term there is enough fruit. It's my only bottle, so I am not likely to find out. vg+

Nose: hard to place, other than a bit of cedar. Palate: herbs & a bit of a spicy kick. A kick of acidity on the back end. Past its prime, but you can see what it had.

In a nice place and nice aged flavors but just a little basic and one dimensional as one would expect from a village wine
